Wow, your responses have really shed some light on this for me. IMHO, It all comes right back down to "Judge not lest ye be judged" I guess that doesn't apply if you're a self-righteous JW who either doesn't do anything wrong or hides it well enough as to not get "Marked". Well at least I know it wasn't my personallity that was keeping people from socializing with me. Rather it was my worldy boyfriend, friends, job, car, boots, dog, nail polish, ability to think for myself, obvious boredom at the WT meetings, family, choice of toilet paper, fondness for indian food, etc, etc, etc....
Thanks everyone!

How does one get marked?
by On the Fence inok, i've been involved with jw's for 15 years or so, but i've not been deep enough into any "clicks" to know how someone gets "marked".
will someone explain?
i'm sure i must have been marked more than once for stupid reasons - only going to 2-3 of the 5 weekly meetings (hey, some of us do have to do laundry every now and then), not commenting enough (they wouldn't want to hear my comments now), not going out in service enough, etc.

i've been off work with a bad cold since tuesday and there was a knock on the door this afternoon.
i don't usually answer the door to strangers but on this occasion i did as i could see 2 elderly gentlemen.

Legolas-
You're kidding right? You can't donate money to the Red Cross?!? Why the hell not?! What's they're reasoning behind that? I don't see the JW's there to help victims of anything unless they're helping other devout JW's.
No Garage Sales?! Really? Why. I hadn't heard that one before either. I guess I really wasn't in as deep as I thought I was. Whew! -

Prince and the Kingdom melodies...
by On the Fence ini'm sure you've all heard about prince becoming a baptized jw, right?
i've been a prince fan since the early 80's.
only been a jw since the mid 90's.

Anyhooo, whenever I'm at the Hall (not often anymore) and that horrible, low quality taped piano music starts playing, I can't help but think "It has just got to drive Prince crazy to listen to this!" Here's this musical genius who taught himself to play several instruments by the age of 12 and this is the "spiritually uplifting" music he has to listen to at the meetings. What's up with that music?!? With as much money and resources as the witnesses have, you'd think they could at least have decent music to play at the meetings? Right?! I just hope that becoming a JW won't stifle Prince's seemingly unending well of creativity. That would just be a terrible shame. I can only imagine how some of the old elders who had never heard of Prince before must treat him. I bet they're watching him all the time and I'm sure they have many issues with his naturally androgynous appearance.

>"Some things, like the bald head, were addressed in local needs talk. Of course it's discussed in the most caring way, to lovingly warn the others of a possible bad association." Hi Willowmoon, You're sh***ing me when you say they marked you for a chemo induced bald head, right? What did they "lovingly" say to you? Better yet, what was your response to them. I think that would have been my ticket out the door right then. Don't pass go, don't collect $200. I would have been out of there but probably not before I said enough cuss words to get D/F first! I hope you're cancer free now. For some reason, my posts don't show up as HTML. Maybe because I use a mac?!? Anyone know?

I didn't word my question correctly. What I want to know is how does the fact that someone is "marked" get around? Is it spread like gossip or is there a meeting amongst the elders or ??? Now that I know you can be marked for just about anything, I could make a long list of the things that I've likely been marked for... let's see... 1. Not attending all the meetings 2. wearing boots with a dress. (there was 2 feet of snow on the ground, for Pete's sake) 3. wearing dress pants to a meeting once instead of a dress/skirt. Oh no, I'm going to not be resurected for that one! 4. owning sports cars instead of "service" cars. 5. hating being single and hoping for a "mate". Damn those natural desires! 6. working overtime a few times a year. 7. having worldy family and friends that I refused to shun 8. reading Stephen King novels or other non-JW magazines/books I could go on like this but I won't bore you any longer.

Dune, What a load of #@$#. Get "marked" for going to college. Ya know, I had an elder tell me that, in the round-about way that they use, that I should quit my decent paying job because it required overtime occasionally. He said it would be better for me to be a ditch digger or sewage worker and not work overtime and make much less money, than to keep my white collar job and have to miss meetings sometimes. ha ha ha. I don't see him playing around in sewage. Easy for him to say. So how do the elders or other sanctimonious people go about marking someone? Is it just spread like gossip or what?

For instance; Judge lest not ye be judged... oh, wait. That's not the NWT version. Maybe that would go something like this... ahem... "Judge everyone by this ridiculous set of arbitrary rules that the organization has established but can not be found in the bible. Make sure you constantly judge yourself by these rules, too. If you live up to this, you can look down your nose at everyone you think does not." ;)

Hi Bryan, No, I don't have any family in the org. I haven't yet told my family that I no longer consider myself part of the org. I'm sure they would all be quite happy about that. That also makes it easier for me to leave. I was a convert not a 2nd or 3rd generation.
